LaLiga, Spain’s top flight soccer body, is poised to return to the UK media rights tender market in May or June with a three-season package running through 2022.

Current main UK rights holder, over-the-top (OTT) streaming service Eleven Sports, will have to bid again should it wish to keep hold of the coverage, with its revised LaLiga arrangement expiring at the end of this season.

Mediapro, the agency briefed with selling LaLiga’s international rights, had initially agreed a three-season deal through 2020/21 with Eleven last year, replacing the rights holder’s previous long-term partner Sky.

However, Eleven was forced to renegotiate that deal in December after facing difficulties with its UK business, mainly a result of failing to secure linear TV distribution.

Eleven retained its digital LaLiga media rights in the short term but handed back a number of contracts to IMG, including Serie A soccer.

Since then, both pay-TV network Premier Sports and commercial broadcaster ITV have acquired non-exclusive LaLiga rights for the rest of the 2018/19 season.
